Don’t fall in a rabbit hole on your way to the Downtown Business Association’s Family Day Festival. This year Alice won’t be in Wonderland, instead she and the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Cheshire Cat will be participating in all of the Family Day excitement that will riddle the heart of our city.
Each year the Downtown Business Association (DBA) coordinates various downtown venues for a fun-filled family day including games, arts and crafts, special performances, and activities for all ages.
Passport Program:
The DBA has partnered with ATB financial to execute a passport contesting program where Family Day attendees can pick up a Family Day Passport and enter a contest to win a $500 RESP from ATB Financial.
Passports will be available at any participating venue between 12:00PM – 4:00PM (contesting and stamping will only be available between these hours) they can also pick up a map of the downtown for the Family Day Festival to make it easier to locate the participating locations.
Passports are utilized for contesting and will have an entry form for the grand prize at the end of the day. In order to enter the contest, families must visit at least three different venues, and after receiving stamps from each venue (having a minimum of three stamps on their Family Day Passport). Once all three stamps are collected, the passport must be dropped of at the drop-off point at the ATB Financial Community Cruiser parked on Churchill Square, no later than 4:00 PM.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is offering hands-on arts workshops including looking at illustrations of John Tenniel and using mixed media create a puppet of your favorite character from Alice in Wonderland. Through the Looking Glass: Sylvain Voyer’s dream-like landscapes will inspire you to create a small diorama that depicts an imaginary reality. Follow Alice Downtown for an Adventure in Wonderland Scavenger Hunt at the Art Gallery of Alberta with prizes to be won!

Check out local shopping centres for Family Day events as well. My sources (ok, it was Becky) told me that Millwoods is having Medieval themed events and I am sure other shopping centres will have petting zoos and other activities.

Arpillera Display at the Museum
I finally had time today to take a long look at the Arpillera display on at the Royal Alberta Museum.

There were also many other more joyful artworks, showing children playing on playgrounds or market scenes. The artwork and meaning behind the arpilleras was really moving.

During the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, many Chilean women created complex tapestries depicting the harsh conditions of life and the pain resulting from the disappeared victims of Pinochet’s repression. These tapestries, known as arpilleras, get their name from the Spanish word for the burlap backing they used. However, through their art they came to represent much more in the history of modern Chile.
Arpilleras came to symbolize women’s protest against the brutal Pinochet dictatorship. Although these women worked quietly and used a traditionally feminine method, their arpilleras had wide influence within Chile and internationally. The tapestries and the art of making them preserved the memory of los desaparecidos (the disappeared people) and the dictatorship’s brutality, as well as the unemployment, food shortages, housing shortages, and other hardships of daily life which were attributed to Pinochet’s rule. Simply preserving this collective memory was itself an act of protest, but creating the arpilleras also empowered the women in other ways. Many women experienced cognitive liberation through their work in the arpillera workshops, and became involved in other protests against Pinochet’s regime. They also began to confront machismo in their own homes and in society in general by claiming a wider role for women.
