Yann Martel will speak about Life of Pi and the new illustrated edition just released. He will address the process of bringing a book to illustration, and his plans for a new book.
He will also talk about such things as the meaning of reading, the meaning of culture, the artist as activist, and "What is Stephen Harper Reading" and the role of politicians to be representative.
The evening will follow an interactive style format with Yann Martel's presentation, dialogue between Yann Martel and Peter Brown, and questions from the audience.
Yann Martel is the prize winning author of The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios (1993), Self (1996), and Life of Pi which won the 2002 Man Booker Prize, and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award. This unusual fantasy come surreal novel is inspired by Yann's travels, particularly a stay in India. He weaves the story around a World War Two tale of shipwreck.
Today Life of Pi is widely recognized and remains one of the most extraordinary works of fiction in recent years. Life of Pi has been translated into 40 languages and has sold over 6 million copies world wide.
The success of the book has inspired an illustrated version. To find the artist to do the job a worldwide contest was launched which yielded 1800 entries. Tomislav Torjanac from Croatia is the successful illustrator. This new illustrated edition is available mid November.
